A People-Centred Initiative in the Field of Sanitation and Waste Management

The **Haritha Karma Sena** is a people-centred initiative operating in the field of sanitation and waste management in Local Self-Government Institutions across Kerala. Haritha Karma Senas were formed in Local Self-Government Institutions in 2017 as part of the **Haritha Keralam Mission** implemented by the Government of Kerala.

As per government orders, members of the **Haritha Karma Sena** directly collect non-biodegradable waste from households and institutions by collecting the service fee (User Fee) fixed by the respective Local Self-Government Institutions. In some places, they also collect biodegradable waste.

The non-biodegradable waste collected at regular intervals is transported to the **Material Collection Facility (Waste Collection Centre)**. There, the waste is segregated and sent to the **Resource Recovery Facility (Resource Recovery Centre)**. It is then transferred for reuse and recycling. .

**Methods and solutions for the management of biodegradable waste at households are provided under the leadership of the Haritha Karma Sena.**

The **Haritha Keralam Mission, Kudumbashree, Suchitwa Mission, Clean Kerala Company, and Local Self-Government Institutions** are all key stakeholders in the activities of the Haritha Karma Sena.
